Mustangs winless in first day at Park

PARKVILLE, Mo. | Morningside’s men’s volleyball team slipped to 3-8 on the season after losing a pair of matches at Friday’s Park Pirate Invitational.

Oscar Alvarez Cancel slammed 15 kills, but it wasn’t enough as Morningside lost 25-18, 19-25, 27-25, 25-17 to Culver-Stockton. Jacob Brand, a 6-foot-9 junior middle blocker from Homer, Neb., added 13 kills for the Mustangs along with one solo block and three block assists.

Setter Caden Toben dished 41 assists. Jacob Loberg had 19 digs while Jackson Presha provided three solo blocks and two block assists. Ryan Coyle and Jimmy Aschenbrenner delivered four and three block assists, respectively.

Seventh-ranked Missouri Valley posted a grueling 25-16, 24-26, 25-22, 21-25, 15-9 win over a Morningside squad that’s now 1-1 in five-game matches this season.

Alvarez Cancel provided 21 kills, nine digs and two block assists for Morningside. Brand added 10 kills and four block assists while Toben finished with 47 assists, two ace serves and two block assists. Presha also recorded two ace serves.

Coyle topped the Mustangs in the blocking department with four solos and two assists. Aschenbrenner had one solo block and four solos.
