Re-entry awards honor women who overcome obstacles to attend college

Award winners: Four Northland students received Re-entry Awards from Kansas City area branches of the national association.

ShaVaughn Holloway, a student majoring in English at Park University, received the Parkville Branch Re-entry Scholarship of $500, given in memory of Julie Boltz and Betty Johnson, longtime members of the branch.

Recipients of the Greater Kansas City Interbranch Council Re-entry awards from Park University were Cherie Servello, a sociology and psychology major, and Crystal Swope, a social work major; and from Metropolitan Community College-Maple Woods, Charity Bishop, who is pursuing an associate degree in social work.

The re-entry awards honor women who have overcome serious obstacles to enter or return to college after being out of school for at least five years.

Staley High School

Math teacher recognized: Barbara Madden was named Teacher of the Year by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7356 in Parkville.

Madden works with about 150 students in two service organizations: Senior Beta Club and Interact Club. One of the service projects involves staking more than 1,000 American flags around Staley before school starts on Veterans Day.

Kansas State University

Academic excellence: Kooper Holbrook from Kearney qualified for membership in Phi Kappa Phi on the campus in Manhattan.

Holbrook is earning a master’s degree in architecture.

To be chosen for the all-discipline honor society, graduate students must rank in the top 10 percent of their class.
